Jamie Hawkins in Cape Town.
(December 07)

I was invited on a trip to Cape Town by Timo Mullen and John Carter, both old friends from way back. I was very excited cause I had not been away on a travel trip for a while and the conditions are normally good down there around this time of year.

A couple of weeks earlier I had spoken to Patrice about using his (Exocet) boards again as I was getting to do more and more sailing and wanted to get back the same feel from the awesome custom shapes he and Jean Marie used to make for me when I was on the world tour a few years ago. My trip was also sponsored by my old partners Animal and Neil Pryde , which was all great.

On to the sailing..
When I arrived in cape town We went straight to the beach from the Airport , It was sunny and windy, so we headed down to the cape, to Whitsand bay, which is one of the more exposed beaches kicking up the most swell and wind. By mid day I was on a 4.5 Pryde Alpha and my Exo Wave 83 which was ripping. I had sailed the board a couple of times back home before I left, so I knew what it was capable of, but here you could really use the full range of the boards capabilities. Just like before the board was quick and powerful, but now it also had a looseness about it which would enable you to do both hard carves - when the board really grips of the top turn, and throws decent spray of the back and you could brake out the tail, at will, which made 'takas' and reverse tail slides very controllable. : Read more :
